Inside Harold's van

Harold knows how to be a digital superhero. He is sharing his ideas with us.

This is how we can be a digital superhero.

Harold likes our ideas.

Learning how to be responsible users of iPads, iPhones, computers and television.

Sarah is talking to us about sharing our devices, getting enough exercise and always needing an adult to be with us when we use our devices.

Life education with Harold

Waiting to visit Harold again today.

Monday May 25

Hello everyone and welcome to the start of a new but very chilly week.

Spelling homework

In the  homework book this week you will notice that we have added a spelling list.  This list correlates with the sight words that the children also bring home at night.

In the homework book you will see there is space for the children to write each word twice each night until Thursday night. You could try spelling the word out loud and copying it on Monday and Tuesday, then spelling the word out loud and writing it without looking on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Friday we will take a test on the list and if mastered the children will move onto the next list.
The children will also be doing this at school during the day.

This little extra efforts with spelling is aimed to supplement the changes we have made to our writing programme.  We are hoping it will help the children write more quickly and fluently.  Not getting stuck on the spelling of commonly used words will help the children spend more time writing the sounds they can hear in words that will make their stories more interesting.

This little bit of extra work is supplementary to the work we do at school.  If it creates too much pressure please let me know.

Harold - Life Education

Today we had the first of two visits to the Life Education Caravan parked here at school.  Sarah the Life Ed teacher (and Harold the friendly giraffe), talked to the children about all the things our body needs - oxygen, water, sleep, washing, food, love and safety.  She also talked to them about learning to manage the time they spend using devices such as computer, iPads and phones. Sarah read them a story about a Panda with square eyes!

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to post some pictures and some of the ideas the children have about Harold and staying healthy.

Tuesday

The Science Alive Cosmodome at Sacred Heart School today.  The children learned lots of information about the night sky including planets, stars, constellations, the international space station, and of course 'Matariki'.

Waiting to enter another universe! Unfortunately we could not take pictures inside but ask the children and they will tell you some of the many things we learned. A fantastic start to our study of Planet Earth and Beyond.

Monday

Today we had a visit from Sr Ann of the Mission Sisters. The Mission Sisters are marking 150 years of work in New Zealand. As they were the original teachers at Sacred Heart School we marked the occasion by planting a punga tree fern in our native garden.

The children watched on while a child from each room helped bed in the punga.

Sr Ann then talked about her work with children in schools in the Philippines and Cambodia.

Friday 8 May 2015

A busy Friday

Today we further developed our P.E. skills with Steve from Kelly sports. This is the second of 4 lessons which will help the children develop some early soccer skills.

We also made beautiful prayer flags for Nepal. The children chose a Kiwiana image to put on each flag along with a message of hope, peace, love or happiness. The flags will hang outside our room for the next week and then we will send them to a school in Nepal. Come in and see our work.

Term 2

Learning about the letter j J this week.

We coloured the shape of the letters j J.
Then we cut out our letters and glued them to bright paper so we could see the letter shape.
