February

Today is the last day in February and already we have had so many learning experiences that we could share with you.  Some of them are represented by the pictures below.

We found an apple tree in Father John's garden.  We enjoyed eating the apples and then and writing about how crunchy and red and juicy they were.

The  bigger children have been looking after the school garden.  Last year they planted sunflowers and look how tall they have grown. Way taller than us!!

We have also picked strawberries from our class garden every day. We have learned how to tell which strawberries are ready to eat and we learned the correct way to pick them so we don't damage the plant.

Last week we held a Memorial Service to mark 5 years since the Christchurch earthquake.  We remembered and prayed for everyone who has been affected by changes in their families and the changes in our city.  The children were very respectful. The teachers read prayers and the senior children place flowers on our memorial tree.

Friday fun under the school hose!

As promised all week - we finally got a warm, wind free day for a play under the hose with children from Room 2 and 5.
Miss Duncan was fiendish with the hose! The children had such fun.

Don't forget Mass tomorrow evening.

How I keep my brain healthy for learning!

Today we began our work on how to keep our brain healthy so we can learn.  The children have taken home a 'log book' and we would like them to focus on the things they do in the day that enable them to learn. For example, how much exercise they do each day, what healthy food they eat, how much time is spent using a digital device and how much sleep they get each night.  It would be great if you could help your child fill out this log every day for the next week.  Please return it to school next Wednesday morning.  With thanks. Kate.

Naomi received this weeks Duffy Book.  She has been very kind to our visitors and new people. Great job Naomi!

Raiken earned a certificate for fantastic effort at instructional reading group time and Samantha earned her certificate for being a responsible and helpful class member.

Holiday adventures

New Years Eve - Melbourne  Fire on the 29th floor of my daughter's apartment building in Melbourne! We had to gather ourselves, passports, money and dog and descend via the fire stairs from the 36th floor in 38 degree heat! We had to stay out of the building for 4 hours, but it was fascinating to watch a well organised Metropolitan Fire Service in operation.  I remain in awe of the fitness, professionalism and efficiency of the fire fighters.

I have included some pictures of the fire fighting units and will share them with the children tomorrow.  Please talk to your children about some of the exciting experiences they have away from school so they will be ready to share them at mat time.

AND THEN  Home in time to see the New Year's Fireworks from the balcony!

New children in Room 1 today.

Riaken, Ruby and Naomi returned to Room 1.  They are the big children now and have done a great job today being fantastic role models for the new children. All the children in Room 1 have had a very calm and settled day.

A very big welcome to Juriz, Xzavierre and Santiago - all of whom coped very well with our first day BUT will need a big sleep tonight.
